化学与生态毒理学国家重点实验室主任，中国化学会副理事长，中国毒理学会副理事长，中国化学会环境化学专业委员会主任，北京色谱学会理事长，系《环境化学》、《中国科学》、《科学通报》等杂志主编、副主编或编委和多本国际杂志副主编或编委。2005年受美国化学会委托领导成立了国际著名杂志ES&T的 Asian Office并独立负责审理和录用来自世界各地的稿件。研究领域涉及化学形态、分析仪器、环境过程与毒理、纳米材料环境应用及效应等。提出并推进了我国持久性有毒污染物的研究，为两期POPs 973项目首席科学家，国家基金委重大基金和创新群体负责人，国家973顾问组成员，国家纳米重大研究计划专家组成员，国家环境咨询委员会委员，国家食品安全风险评估专家委员会委员等。曾分别参加我国南极和北极科学考察。在国外SCI收录杂志发表论文500篇，出版中英文专著5部。应邀在国内外重要学术会议和著名大学作大会报告或特邀报告350次。培养的研究生2人获全国百篇优秀论文，先后6次获各种优秀研究生导师奖。1998年获得国家杰出青年科学基金，2001年获得中科院青年科学家奖，2008年获得香港浸会大学University Fellow, 2003年和2011年两次以第一完成人获得国家自然科学二等奖，2007年获得长江学者成就奖, 2013年 获得安捷伦公司“思想领袖奖”,同年以POPs研究集体名义获得中国科学院杰出成就奖, 2014年获得香港浸会大学“杰出客座教授”。2009年当选中国科学院院士，2012年当选发展中国家科学院院士。
