周集中,1959年8月出生于湖南新邵,生物学家,现任美国橡树岭国家实验室环境基因组学研究中心主任,清华大学环境学院教授。
1981年12月毕业于湖南农业大学植物保护专业,后又获得该校昆虫专业硕士学位并留校任教。后在美国华盛顿州立大学获得分子遗传学和细胞生物学博士学位。2001年7月12日在白宫授予其美国总统青年科学家奖。

人物经历

1981年考取湖南农业大学昆虫专业硕士研究生,师从著名的昆虫生态学家陈常铭教授,进行数学生态研究。
1985年获硕士学位,留湖南农业大学任教。
1986年考取中国科学院环境生态研究中心系统生态室博士生,师从于已故的国际上著名的生态学家马世骏教授,从事农业生态系统的研究。
1993年5月周集中在华盛顿州立大学(Washington State University)获得分子遗传学和细胞生物学博士学位。
1993年6月1997年6月在美国密歇根州立大学(Michigan State University)美国自然科学基金会资助的微生物生态中心,跟随美国科学院院士、美国微生物学会主席,国际上享有崇高盛望的微生物生态学家詹姆斯.迪杰(James Tiedje)教授从事博士后工作,主要进行微生物分子生态研究。
1996年周集中博士获得美国能源部杰出博士后资助来到橡树岭国家实验室工作,不久即被聘为研究员。
1997年6月至今在美国橡树岭国家实验室先后任研究员、高级研究员、杰出研究员和环境基因组学研究中心主任。微生物学权威刊物Applied and Environmental Microbiology 杂志主编之一,美国微生物科学院(American Academy of microbiology)院士。2004年1月任中南大学“升华名师”微生物学科责任教授。

微生物功能基因组学、基因组学研究技术、微生物生态和极端环境条件下的微生物以及群落和生态系统基因组学等多个领域。
 

工作成果

从1997年,周博士在橡树岭国家实验室获得许多不同的奖励,例如,
2000年度的环境科学部的杰出成就奖,1998和2001的橡树岭国家实验室的研究成果奖。
承担美国“Genomes to Life”等重大项目20余项及中国海外青年合作研究基金等多项课题。
先后获得2001年度美国青年科学家总统奖以及美国能源部和橡树岭国家实验室青年科学家奖等多项奖励,
曾任第七届、九届和十一届国际微生物基因组学大会主席。
主编了微生物功能基因组学领域的第一本专著《Microbial Functional Genomics》。[3] 
在Science, Nature Review Microbiology, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, PNAS, Ecology Letters, ISME Journal, mBio等重要杂志发表论文540余篇(Citations >20,000, H-index, 75 based on Web of Science; Citations >29,000, H-index, 91 based on Google Scholar)。
担任ISME J, mBio, AEM等著名期刊主编,F1000推荐专家。
成立“周集中—石小娅”奖学金,由周集中及夫人石小娅捐赠,专用于奖励清华大学从事生态学及环境科学与工程的优秀学生,代表了周集中教授对莘莘学子的激励。作为环境学院唯一个人出资成立的奖学金,周集中表示,“捐赠不是因为富有,只是尽自己的微薄之力对社会做些有意义的事。”[4]
